Learning Tools and Resources

To support professional reflection and learning, the H&F SAB has produced a series of resources based on local learning which can be used in different settings. This page acts as a local library, where you can to downloads of tools, presentations and video resources as well as information about upcoming H&F SAB training opportunities.

H&F SAB Reflective Sessions

Throughout the year, the H&F SAB offers focused sessions exploring topics that link to our priority areas and themes from local learning. The content from these sessions is available to download here.

Trauma Informed Practice

In February 2025, we held a focused session exploring trauma informed practice. This was in response to recommendation from Safeguarding Adults Review Brian which recommended work to increase understanding and application of the principles of intersectionality and trauma informed practice. Download the slides to find out more about Brian and what being trauma-informed means in practice.

Managing autonomy while minimising risk

A common challenge in safeguarding practice is balancing a person's right to choice and autonomy with managing risk. In this session we explored local learning and case law to better understand what this means for practice.

Self-Neglect

In December 2024 the SAB received a report on the outcomes from multi-agency audit exploring professional responses to self-neglect. We shared the findings of this audit in this lunch & learn session delivered in January 2025.

Remember to also check out our multi-agency self-neglect guidance to support you in practice.

Other Learning Resources

The H&F SAB also has lots of resources which have been designed so that individuals can use them for individual reflection or use a tool within team meetings or supervision. Find out about these resources as well as useful resources from elsewhere.

Remember to complete our 'lessons learnt' template to feedback on how useful these resources and share your reflections on any barriers to implementing learning.

Professional Curiosity

Professional curiosity is often a theme within statutory reviews. This resource seeks to explore what we mean by professional curiosity and the potential barriers to being professionally curious.

The National SAB Managers network has also developed guidance with some useful prompts.

Discriminatory abuse

This resource aims to support practitioners in developing their understanding of what is meant by discriminatory abuse of adults at risk, and how to shape their responses. You can use this briefing in team meetings, supervision or in as a personal learning exercise.

Download the tool here.

7-minute briefings

We produce 7-minute briefings to help us focus on the key issues around a particular theme, current issue or from a learning review (such as a Safeguarding Adults Review (SAR)). These briefings include guidance on how to use them as a tool to support conversation and reflection.

  • SAR Alison - this SAR includes themes of fire safety, substance use and mental capacity
  • SAR Brian - this SAR includes themes of substance use and working with complexity.
  • Eric - this case study explores domestic abuse and support for carers.
